Billy, like many children, believed that there was a monster under the bed. Every night, Billy would wake up screaming. He would run into his parents room, and beg them to let him sleep there. Billy's father was getting very upset that his son continued to do this over the years. No matter what he tried, Billy just continued to always be afraid of the "monster". His father would always check under the bed and reassure his son. He stated that Billy was no longer allowed to continue to sleep in the room with them.
Billy's dad had been working hard all day, and was very tried. That night, Billy woke him up due to the monster again. He was furious, so he told Billy he was going to put a stop to his childishness. Billy always said that the monster would tell him that if he hung his foot off his bed, that he would eat. That he was hungry. His dad said this was not real, so he tied the little boy's foot off the bed so he could not move. Billy cried and cried, but his dad did not care. When his mother came to aid him, the father hit her across the face. He told her it was her fault for raising such a weak child.
That night, the monster came. The monster ended up licking the child's foot, but did not bite him. The monster thanked him, and said he had been starving. He was never going to eat him, as he only eats bad people. He stated that kids always get their feet so dirty, and he liked to eat the dirt and dead skin from the foot. That is why often times one sock goes missing, because his kind are messy eaters and will eat a sock here or there.
Billy told his dad that he knew how to get over being afraid of monsters. He wanted his dad to tie his own foot off the bed, and show him that the monsters are not real. His father, irritated that not even forcing Billy into hanging his foot off seemed to help, agreed. That night, the monster came back. This time; however, he ate Billy's dad whole. Billy and his mom lived happily ever after.
Monsters are most certainly real, but most do not hide out of plain site. As it were, Billy's monster was the very person there to protect him. His own father. The real cruelty of the world is far darker than any horror story could be. Never mistake a friendly face as a friend or a sinister one for a foe. Time often reveals all things.
Thank you for joining me tonight and allowing me to share my tell of dread. Sleep well, if you can, and I look forward to our time together tomorrow night.
